What Will the Weather and Temperatures Be During the Everest Base Camp Trek in Spring?

The month of March marks the beginning of the blossoming spring. The temperature will gradually rise however it will still be quite cold at the beginning of March. The temperature will get warmer day by day. The weather will be stable with clear skies and a few clouds.

The days get longer and comparatively warmer in the middle of the season. The temperature will be moderate, neither too cold nor too hot. Since it is the dry season, there is no possibility of snow. The month of May is the warmest as the monsoon will be moving forward north of India, causing warmer temperatures and cloud coverage. So the weather could be unpredictable and due to global warming, there could be drizzling rainfall. Hence, we recommend packing rain gear compulsorily for Everest Base Camp Trek in the spring.

On average, the maximum temperature will be around 15 C during the day and it will drop to -14 C at minimum during the night time. In early spring it will be cold during the morning, late evening, and night so we recommend wearing clothes in layers.

What are the Major Events in Everest During Spring?

  • Everest Expedition and Everest Marathon in Spring

During your trip to Everest Base Camp in spring, you will meet many other climbers and mountaineers who will be climbing the Mighty Mt.Everest. You will see porters carrying heavy loads to facilitate the climbers during their stay at the base camp of Mt.Everest.

Mount Everest is the top of the world. Everyone dreams of climbing the Mighty Mt.Everest as it stands high in the world. People called it by different names such as Sagarmatha in Nepali which means “Goddess of the Sky” and Chomolungma in Tibetan meaning “Goddess Mother of the world”. Both the names reflect its vagueness. The Everest Expedition is carried out in the spring season of every year as the season favors the weather for climbing.

Mount Everest can be climbed from Nepal or Tibet side. The southeast route from Nepal is technically more accessible so many climbers conquered the highest point from this route. It was the route used by the history makers Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay who made the first ascent of Mighty Mt.Everest on 29th May 1953.

Similarly to mark the history of the first summit, the annual Everest Marathon is held around the vicinity of Mount Everest in May. It is considered to be one of the highest and toughest races in the world. People from all over the world join to experience the adventure and thrill of running at high altitudes.

Similarly, the Everest Expedition and Everest Marathon fall in the spring hence more climbers and participants for the events and expedition will be heading to their destination more crowded.

Trekkers will follow the traditional Everest Base Camp Trail. If you want to avoid congestion on the route, you can take a different route to reach Everest Base Camp. You can choose Salleri from Everest Base Camp Trek. The trek will take a scenic jeep drive to Salleri – the District Headquarters of Solukhumbu and a trek to Lukla exploring the virgin culture and landscape of the lower Solukhumbu region. Another alternative is Everest Base Camp Trek and Fly Back Helicopter, in which you trek to Everest Base Camp and fly out enjoying a thrilling helicopter ride from Gorakshep to Lukla.

If you want to explore Khumbu Valley more then you can add Gokyo Lake and Cho-la Pass to your itinerary making it Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek. You will witness the highest freshwater lake in the world – Gokyo Lake and trek to Everest Base Camp, crossing an altitude of 5420 m – Cho La Pass. Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek will reward you with breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas, glaciers, and freshwater lakes.

If you are an experienced trekker, you can choose Everest Three Passes Trek – a compact package of adventure and thrill. You will encounter variations in the scene from Sherpa villages, wild fauna, glaciers, lakes, and high passes to Everest Base Camp in this single trek.

Note: In the early spring, the route to Everest Base Camp will have few trekkers hence you can avoid the crowds by trekking early in the spring enjoying the peaceful trail to Everest Base Camp.

Lukla Flights

The flight to Lukla from Kathmandu is dependent on the weather so many times, the flight gets delayed or even canceled due to bad weather. Moreover, many trekkers and climbers tend to book the flight hence during the peak season, the flights won’t be available so get them in advance as soon as possible.

Altitude Sickness

Everest Base Camp is a high-altitude trek in the high Himalayas of Nepal. When you ascend more than 2500 m, you are likely to get altitude sickness due to a lack of oxygen in the atmosphere. The higher you ascend, the higher the chance of acute mountain sickness. To avoid it, you need to follow some precautions. They are:

  • To stay hydrated is most important so drink plenty of water.
  • Ascend slowly and steadily so that your body adjusts to the changing atmospheric pressure.
  • Take an acclimatized hike – “Climb High, Sleep Low”.
  • Avoid the consumption of caffeine, alcohol, and smoking as they make you dehydrated.
  • If you feel any symptoms – “Descend, Descend, and Descend”.

Accommodation

Generally during the peak season, the teahouses and lodges get fully packed so if you are traveling alone without a guide, you might not get a room at the teahouses. It’s recommended to hire trek guides when you trek to Everest Base Camp. They will assist you in getting the accommodation and other amenities during your journey to Everest Base Camp.
