The Kapuche Lake Kori Trek is one of Nepal's most underrated short adventures, tucked into the Sikles Madi hills of Kaski district in the Annapurna region. It is an 11-day journey to two of Nepal's least known natural landmarks: Kapuche Glacier Lake, widely regarded as the world's lowest altitude glacial lake, and Kori Danda, an open ridge at 3,800 meters that local Gurung communities call the midpoint of Nepal. Unlike Everest or Annapurna's main trails, this route sees very few trekkers, which means quiet teahouses, genuine village life, and mountain views without the crowd. The trek starts and ends in Sikles, one of the largest Gurung villages in Nepal, and does not require any restricted area permit, just an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS card. All details are customized to your pace and interests. Join us for 2026 and 2027, with discounts available around festival seasons.

Complete Guide to the Kapuche Lake Kori Trek in Nepal

The Kapuche Lake Kori Trek is one of the newest trekking routes to open in the Annapurna region, and it remains largely unknown even among experienced trekkers in Nepal. The trail climbs from Sikles village through rhododendron, oak, and pine forest to Hugu Goth, a small highland herding stop, before branching off to Kapuche Glacier Lake and continuing up over Nho-ta to the open ridge of Kori Danda.

Kapuche Lake sits at roughly 2,450 meters, fed by glacial melt and framed by forested slopes, and is known locally and internationally as the lowest altitude glacial lake on record. Kori Danda, at 3,800 meters, rewards the climb with sweeping views of Annapurna II, Machhapuchhre, Lamjung Himal, and Himlung Himal, and on its northeast side hides Dudh Pokhari, a small sacred lake visited by pilgrims during the Janai Purnima festival each August or September, a detail most trekkers never hear about before arriving.

This trek is as much about the Gurung communities along the way as it is about the landscape. Sikles has been known since 1980 as the Royal Trek village, after Prince Charles visited to see the villages that have long supplied Gurkha recruits, and older residents still wear handwoven patuka waistbands as everyday dress, not just for festivals.

Dudh Pokhari and Kori Danda's Ridge

The side highlight of this trek, easy to miss if you don't know to look for it, is Dudh Pokhari, a small sacred lake on the northeast side of Kori Danda. Pilgrims climb here specifically around the Janai Purnima festival, but most trekking groups walk straight past without ever knowing it exists. Trekkers who take the extra hour to explore the full ridge at Kori Danda are usually the only ones who find it. Locals refer to this same ridge as sitting near the geographic center point of Nepal, a detail that comes up constantly in conversation with porters and Gurung elders but rarely makes it into any trek description.

A Genuinely Remote Trekking Experience in Nepal

The Kapuche Lake Kori Trek is Nepal's most rewarding short escape from crowded trails. This 11-day journey takes you through unspoiled forest, quiet Gurung villages, and open highland ridges that most trekkers in Nepal never reach. Far from the packed teahouses of Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill, this route runs through the Annapurna Conservation Area's lesser-known corner, where dense forest gives way to glacial lake basins and high alpine meadow. You will pass through Sikles and Hugu village, Gurung communities that welcome you not as a tourist passing through, but as a guest sharing their home. Every step on this quiet trail leaves the kind of impression that stays with you long after the trek ends.

  • All permits handled, zero hassle. We process your Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS card through registered government channels before you arrive. You focus on the trekking, we handle the paperwork.
  • Customized itineraries built around you. Want an extra day at Kori Danda? Want to skip Kori and just do Kapuche Lake in four days? Tell us what matters to you, and we build the trip around it.

A scenic 6 to 7-hour drive along the Trishuli and Marsyangdi river valleys brings you to Pokhara. The lake city offers your first proper views of the Annapurna range. Overnight by Phewa Lake, with free time in the evening to explore the lakeside.

Day 03:

Drive from Pokhara to Sikles

A jeep drive of around 3 to 4 hours over roughly 40km of hill road takes you to Sikles, one of the largest Gurung villages in Nepal. Explore the village and the small Eco Museum in the afternoon.

Day 04:

Trek from Sikles to Hugu Goth

The trail climbs steadily through forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine, gaining close to 900m over the day. You pass yak sheds and cross a few small streams before reaching Hugu Goth, a highland herding settlement used as a camp and teahouse stop. Walking time is around 5 to 6 hours.

Day 05:

Hike to Kapuche Glacier Lake and return to Hugu Goth

An early start takes you up a narrow, rocky trail for about 2 hours to Kapuche Glacier Lake, sitting at roughly 2,450m to 2,546m depending on the source. Essential Information

What Is the Best Time for the Kapuche Lake Kori Trek?

Spring, from March through May, is a strong choice. Rhododendron forest blooms heavily through April, the climate stays mild, and Kori Danda offers clear views across the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges.

Autumn, from September through November, is the other reliable window. The monsoon rains clear dust from the sky, views stay sharp, and the weather tends to hold steady through the trek. This season overlaps with Dashain and Tihar, Nepal's biggest festivals, adding a cultural layer to the trip.

Winter is walkable if you don't mind cold mornings at Kori Danda, though snow can make the ridge trail tougher underfoot. Monsoon, from June through August, is generally avoided since the lower trail turns muddy, but it has one upside: almost no trekking company builds trips around Kori Hill's open meadow, which turns into a carpet of wildflowers during these months.

Cultural Encounter During the Trek

Sikles is the cultural heart of this trek, one of the largest Gurung villages in Nepal, and known since 1980 as the Royal Trek village, after Prince Charles visited to see the villages that have long supplied Gurkha recruits to the British and Indian armies. Older residents here still wear handwoven patuka waistbands as everyday dress, and the stone houses with slate roofs and carved wooden window frames feel lived in rather than built for visitors. Take the time to visit Sikles' small Eco Museum and talk with locals, since Gurung culture is as much a part of this trek as the mountain views.

Past Sikles, at Hugu Goth, Nho-ta, and Kori Danda, teahouse infrastructure gets simpler, and camping often takes over. Meals here are usually cooked over a wood fire or kerosene stove rather than gas, which slows the evening down but turns the dining hut or campfire into the real center of the night. Trekkers on this route often describe campfire evenings where different groups merge together, trade stories, and end up walking the rest of the trek as one.

Some of the older Gurung residents in this pocket of Kaski district speak a dialect distinct enough that even Nepali-speaking guides notice the difference, a small but real reminder of how isolated and preserved this corner of the Annapurna region has stayed.

Challenges and Difficulties on the Kapuche Lake Kori Trek

Understanding the difficulty of the Kapuche Lake Kori Trek matters before you commit to it. This 11-day trek is moderate to challenging, with a mix of steep forested climbs, rocky ridge walking, and one demanding descent. Reasonable physical fitness and some hill walking experience are recommended, particularly for Day 08's descent from Kori Danda back to Sikles, which drops close to 1,800 meters in a single day and puts real strain on the knees.

Altitude at Kori Danda reaches 3,800 meters, high enough that altitude sickness is a real consideration, so proper acclimatization and a steady pace matter. Weather on the open ridge can shift quickly, with cold mornings and strong winds, so warm layers and good rain protection are essential regardless of season. Away from Sikles, medical facilities are minimal, so a solid first aid kit and travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking are strongly recommended.

Despite these demands, this remains one of the more approachable treks in the Annapurna region for trekkers with moderate experience, and the reward, a genuinely quiet trail with real cultural depth, is well worth the effort.

What Permits Do You Need for the Kapuche Lake Kori Trek in 2026?

Kapuche and Kori are not restricted areas, so getting permits here is simple and cheap compared to regions like Manaslu or Upper Mustang. You need two documents, both arranged before you leave Kathmandu.

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Covers your entry into the conservation area for the full trek. [Typically around NPR 3,000 per person for foreign nationals.]
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System): Required for all trekkers on open, non-restricted routes in Nepal. [NPR 2,000.] We arranged this together with the ACAP permit.

Major Destinations on the Kapuche Lake Kori Trek

Sikles Village (1,981 m)

One of the largest Gurung villages in Nepal, with a small Eco Museum and terraced fields set inside the Annapurna Conservation Area.

Kapuche Glacier Lake (roughly 2,450 m)

A glacial lake with clear turquoise water, widely known as the world's lowest altitude glacial lake. Reached as a side trip from Hugu Goth, along a trail that skirts the same Modi Khola valley that feeds the Annapurna Sanctuary further north, a quieter, earlier stretch of that same river system.

Kori Danda (3,800 m)

The trek's high point is an open ridge with views of Annapurna II, Machhapuchhre, Lamjung Himal, and Himlung Himal. On its northeast side sits Dudh Pokhari, a small sacred lake that pilgrims visit around the Janai Purnima festival.

Annapurna Conservation Area

The trek lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal's largest protected area, running from dense rhododendron, oak, and pine forest below Sikles up to open alpine terrain near Kori Danda. Deer sightings are common along the way, with red pandas occasionally spotted in the quieter stretches. An ACAP permit and TIMS card are required, and the fees go toward conserving the area and supporting local villages like Sikles. If you want further experience and trekking packages in the same region, the Sikles Kapuche Lake Trek (short version) and the Mardi Himal Trek are perfect for you.

Required Documents

  • Your original passport, valid for at least six months from your entry date into Nepal.
  • A Nepal visa is available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or in advance through a Nepalese embassy.
  • Insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended, given how remote the Kori Danda stretch is.

Where to Obtain Permits

Both the ACAP permit and TIMS card are issued in Kathmandu or Pokhara, through the Nepal Tourism Board and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project office. Our team handles both as part of your booking.

Budgeting and Cost Considerations

Plan for transport, accommodation, food, permits, and guide fees.

  • Transportation. The jeep ride between Pokhara and Sikles is included. A private vehicle upgrade is available for an extra cost.
  • Food and Drinks. Meals cost more the higher you climb. Budget around [USD 4 to 6] per meal, and [USD 2 to 3] for tea, coffee, or bottled drinks, more at Kori Danda.
  • Permits. The ACAP permit and TIMS card together usually cost under [USD 50] per person.
  • Guide and Porter Services. Guide rates run [USD 30 to 50] a day, porter rates [USD 20 to 30] a day, covering wages, food, and lodging for the crew.

Alternative Treks to the Kapuche Lake Kori Trek

If you want more time in the mountains, the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp treks are longer, busier alternatives with their own high passes. The Mardi Himal Trek is a shorter, more popular option in the same wider region. For something even shorter, a standalone Kapuche Lake Trek of around four to five days from Pokhara is possible, without the Kori Danda extension. For trekkers with less time who still want real mountain scenery, the Langtang Valley Trek offers a comparable short escape north of Kathmandu.

Packing Essentials for the Kapuche Lake Kori Trek

  • Clothing: Base Layers, Insulating Layers, Outer Layers, Trekking Pants and Shirts, Warm Hat and Gloves, Trekking Socks
  • Footwear: Trekking Boots, Camp Shoes
  • Gear and Equipment: Backpack, Daypack, Sleeping Bag, Trekking Poles, Headlamp, Water Bottles or Hydration System
  • Accessories: Sunglasses, Hat, and Sunscreen Buff or Scarf, Personal First Aid Kit, Dry Bags
  • Personal Items: Toiletries, Towel, Snacks, and Energy Bars, Travel Documents, Camera or Smartphone

Insider Tips for a Memorable Kapuche Lake Kori Trek Experience

Go with an experienced local guide who knows the Sikles and Kori region and its Gurung communities well. Pack light but smart, since the weather on the open ridge at Kori Danda can shift quickly. Take the descent from Kori Danda to Sikles seriously; it drops close to 1,800 meters in a day, so trekking poles help a lot. If you camp above Hugu Goth, stay up for the campfire; groups often merge for the night and end up walking together the rest of the way. Ask your guide about Dudh Pokhari near Kori Danda; most groups walk past it without knowing it's there. Trek in spring or autumn for the clearest views and lowest trekker traffic. Finally, spend real time in Sikles talking with locals, since the Gurung way of life here is a big part of what makes this trek different from anywhere else in the Annapurna region.
